Content Based instruction (CBI) and Task Based Instruction (TBI) have long been noted as effective ways to improve motivation in the language classroom. Through connections to content and coursework designed to facilitate task completion, students are able to engage in activities that encourage real communication and information exchange through the target language. Ultimately students find those exchanges more motivating than traditional language based instruction, as there is a distinct outcome and goal for communication in the target language. Thus, language learning is enhanced by the students’ linguistic engagement. These approaches to language learning can be implemented at any level of instruction and context. In my lecture I will present approaches to incorporating these methods into courses and overall program design. I will also demonstrate how classroom teachers can easily implement CBI/TBI techniques through collaboration with content courses and units designed around task-based projects. Some theoretical considerations will be discussed, along with several examples of CBI and TBI classroom activities for various learner levels and contexts. I will also discuss how needs analysis and materials adaptation play a role in course and lesson design.  Attendees will have a chance to work in small groups to brainstorm and present their own plans for integrating these techniques in the classroom or course design.
