内容简介:

This presentation attempts to shed lights on the connection between the register grammar and the development of linguistic competence.

Having examined the current state of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, the presenter points out that there is a bottleneck in the profession that has prevented the learners of Chinese from developing skills in written Chinese and formal spoken Chinese. Utilizing the latest findings in Chinese register grammar (Feng, 2024; Liu, 2024), this presentation categorizes Chinese registers in four: speakable Chinese, writeable Chinese, readable Chinese and sayable Chinese and claims that developing the linguistic competence in Chinese means to develop the ability in using these four registers effectively and appropriately. To achieve such competence, we propose a pedagogy that bases the writeable Chinese on the speakable Chinese (talking into texts and talking on paper) and bases the sayable Chinese on the readable Chinese (converting written texts into conversations).

The presenter will use actual teaching plans and PPT to demonstrate how to connect the different registers and develop the linguistic competence as a whole.
