College of Chinese Language

Beijing Language and Culture University’s College of Chinese Language began admitting foreign students into its bachelor’s program in 1975.  Today the college has more than 1400 foreign students from 70 different countries.  The College of Chinese Language implements an 8 semester system,recruiting students every year in the fall and spring,and similarly graduating students twice a year in the fall and spring.Up until now more than 3000 students from various counties all over the world have come to China and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the College of Chinese Language. 
The College of Chinese Language currently has 110 instructors, 30 of whom hold Doctorates and another 50 of whom hold Master degrees.  The college is comprised of 4 departments: the Chinese Language Department, the Chinese Language for Economy and Trade Department, the Department of Chinese Culture, and the Bilingual Translation Department.  The College of Chinese Language currently has 8 specialized courses of study,these are:  Chinese Language, Chinese Language for Business and Trade, Chinese-English Bilingual Studies, Chinese-Japanese Bilingual Studies, Japanese-Chinese Translation, Korean-Chinese Translation, Chinese Instruction, and finally Chinese Language and Culture. 

1、Admittance

1、Prospective students wishing to attend the College of Chinese Language must provide Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) results credentials; those foreign students who have not attended a HSK exam must attend this college’s entrance examination.
2、High school graduates possessing a HSK 3rd level (HSK Basic C) certificate of achievement, or students having achieved equivalent test results from our school’s entrance examination may begin their studies as a first year first semester student.
3、High school graduates possessing a HSK [Elementary-Intermediate] 5th level (HSK Basic A) certificate of achievement or students having achieved equivalent test results from our school’s entrance examination may begin their studies as a first year second semester student.
4、High school graduates who have attended college and possessing a HSK [Elementary-Intermediate] 6th level (HSK Intermediate C) certificate of achievement, or students having achieved equivalent test results from our school’s entrance examination may begin their studies as a second year first semester student.

2. Examination Results
1、The semester’s final grade is calculated from the student’s daily grades and a final examination; the daily grades are worth 30% of the final grade while the final examination is worth 70%.  The student’s daily grades include class attendance, homework, classroom performance, as well as the instructor’s evaluation etc.
2、The various grades are averaged using the 100 point system, with 60 points being the lowest passing grade.
3、Make-up test results are not recorded; only a note indicating “pass” or “fail”.  Students passing a make-up exam will receive credit for the class.

3. Outstanding Graduate
3rd and 4th year students whose average grades are in the top 10 and who have already achieved an HSK Advanced Level certificate may, under the college’s authority, be assessed as outstanding graduates and awarded a certificate.  Those outstanding graduates are exempt from taking the graduate student entrance exam in their field of study, and will also receive a scholarship paying for one year of study.

4. Suspension of Studies
1、If a student is unable to continue their studies due to poor health or for other reasons, the student may apply for a suspension of studies.  This suspension is limited to a single year during which school registration and grades are retained, and the suspension period will only be granted once.
2、Students planning to suspend their studies should first submit an application to the College of Chinese Language’s Admission Office.  After approval the student will be issued proof of temporary leave and school exit procedures will then be carried out.

5. Awards
The College of Chinese Language encourages students to participate in the recreational activities sponsored by the college and university.  Those foreign students receiving awards from these activities will also be awarded points to be added to their curriculum grade points.
1、Students attending college and university sponsored activities or competitions will receive the following rewards according to placement:  First place will be awarded 3 points, second place will be awarded 2 points, and third place will be awarded 1 point.
2、A student may not be awarded more than 5 points during a single semester.  Students are free to choose which course they would like the awarded points to be added to.

6. Scholarships
The College of Chinese Language has currently put in place the “Peace and Friendship Award” as well as the “Beijing City Scholarship”.


1、The “Peace and Friendship Award for Exceptional Studies” is awarded once every semester.  The 5 students with the highest grade totals from every semester, totaling 35 students (those in their final semester are not eligible), will be awarded 500 RMB.
2、The “Peace and Friendship Award for Outstanding Contribution” is awarded once every semester.  This award is given to students who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of our college.  There is no limit on the number of recipients, though the number of winners usually does not surpass 10 for each semester.  This award is worth 400 RMB.
3、The “Peace and Friendship Award for Perfect Attendance” is awarded once every semester to students who maintained a perfect attendance record for the previous semester.  This award also has no limit on the number of possible recipients, though each student may not win more than a 50 RMB prize.
4、The “Beijing City Scholarship” is awarded once every semester to the students with the highest grade total from each of the following semesters:  2nd year 1st and 2nd semesters, 3rd year 1st and 2nd semesters, and 4th year 1st semester.  The tuition fee for a single semester will be waived for each of these 5 students.
5、Of those students who graduate from the College of Chinese Language, the 10 students who received the title “Outstanding Graduate”, if continuing their diligent studies at Beijing Language &Culture University as graduate students, will receive the “Beijing City Scholarship” for which the tuition fee for one year is waived.
