Daily
Dear teachers,

Dear Mr Chen,
yu jian (received on May 26, 2004, He took the ielts test on May, 29 and his resulsts are l5 r6 w6 s6)Hi, Prof Chen:
How are you? You might forget who I am, the pulmonary
physician in your class last summer. Three weeks ago, as a Chevening scholar I
arrived in London. Now I am receiving my clinical/research training in Royal
Brompton Hospital, one of the leading hospitals in respiratory medicine in the
world.
The reason I write to you is to share some experience with
you about IELTS which might be useful. You know that I did not get four above-7
band scores the first time as requested. At that point, I just wanted to forget
about it because I was not that enthusiastic about the program. But since I was
interviewed by the professor from Royal College of Physicians (RCP) before I got
the test results, I knew and I told them I was not going to make it; they
believed that I should have done much better. So they insisted that I take
another one in three months time. Unfortunately, this time, I got 7 and 7.5 on
reading and listening but two 6s on speaking and writing. I thought my writing
is just at the level of 6 but my speaking should not be that bad. But anyway, I
wanted to give up. However, the people from RCP didn't, and they suggested me to
give another try. Although I was completely fed up with IELTS, instead of
sitting in another IELTS test, I wrote a short letter asking for remark of my
speaking module. Just out of my expectation, they redid everything, and it
turned out that both my speaking and writing were up-lifted to 7, leaving my
reading and listening scores unchanged.
That's my experience. Believe yourself and if anything could
happen, it will. Maybe next time you could suggest some of your students try
remarking.
Now I am struggling with the homesickness. Although I am not
tired of life, I could not say I like London so much. My clinical training is
quite fine and I got a completely different experience from what I saw in China.
But I am not so keen to be in clinic as my supervisor expects. I don't feel so
comfortable with the dictation which I have never done back home and to be
honest, I am not confident with all those brand names of non-respiratory
medications. However, my supervisor is very optimistic about it.
With Kind Regards

Dear Mr. Chen,
I am one of your students in IELTS training course, the weekend class from Nov.9
to Dec.1. I have just finished the whole training course and I am going to
attend the test on Dec.7. I am writing to say a thank you to all the teachers in
this course.
I feel I have got rapid progress after this course because of your conscientious
work. I am still not able to say I will get the best score in the coming exam,
but I do want to say I feel more confident now. Although the intensive training
is insufficient for a student who have to work during the daytime , I think I am
very lucky to choose your course instead of xxx.
I learned English for many years, but almost returned it all to my teachers
after graduating from university. When I made the decision of attending an
intensive training before the test, I followed others to xxx and bought a bunch
of expensive books, which turned to be a mistake after I listened to you
carefully in the class. I browsed their textbooks full of model essays and
sentences, finding it useless. Then I bought your books with much
surprise------They are really helpful! Not only the revisions for students
essays, but there are plenty of instructions on how to study English well. I
think that is the truth for each English learner-----forget the model, write in
your own words!
Another point I want to mention is our teacher on READING. I am not quite sure
about her name because she always speaks too fast. I want to give her my deep
respect to her due to her excellent teaching! She teaches in a very clear and
distinct way to make the bottom of each question, plus lots of tips and
buzzwords. I am applying for G grade test, while she teaches for A grade.
However, it does not matter. I enjoyed her lesson so much and gained much help
from it.
On the other hand, I am not satisfied with our SPEAKING teacher, an American
named Peter. Maybe he utilize the traditional Chinese teaching method,
teacher-centered, a lot, so we could not get much time to practice speaking in
class. He kept talking the whole morning, occasionally let us say several
sentences one after another and give us a little advice. I think it is not
enough for students who are to be in the test. What we need is to speak a lot to
him or classmates and to be given some useful directions.
Finally, thanks a lot again! If I had another chance to participate in other
exams like Tofel or GRE, I would choose your courses once again. For the quiet
atmosphere on the campus, for the pure academic approach in the classroom, for
the honest and frank teaching attitude of yours!
Best wishes
Yours sincerely,
Liubin (received on 2002-12-05)

Dear Sir:
How are you? I am one of your trainees in IELTS summer class, the "bad" physician who wrote
relatively "good" English essays among medical
professionals. I took my IELTS test for the Chevening Scholarship on Sep 21. Although it's a pain just to recall what happened on the test day, I do
think it's my obligation just to give the feedback to you.
Before I went to bed on the very night before the test, I found my ID card was not in my purse as it always was and realized that it was in the pocket
of my white gown because I had it photocopied for the renewal of our medical
license in the library one day before. Then I was driven all the way to the
hospital and took it back. When I arrived home, it was 12:00 pm and I couldn't fall asleep any more and ended up
in taking sleeping pills. I was
half conscious when I got up the following morning. During the listening module, I was too nervous to pay attention to the instruction about how many
questions would be asked in one block, therefore, I missed one page. I almost fainted when I suddenly realized it. And the influence lasted through
the reading and writing modules. I was flattered by your compliment on my writing, but this time, I would call it complete chaos. I spent more
than 30 minutes on task one, and less than 25 minutes on task two (my watch was five minutes fast). In the remaining five
minutes, I could neither
identify the most obvious grammar mistakes nor find enough space to put in some details. The only module which I was a bit relaxed was the speaking on
the second day, which I treated like a usual chat with a native speaker, using words or sentences which couldn't be simpler as I used in my
everyday life.
In the end, I got 7 for listening, 6.5 for reading, 6 for writing ( which is a shame) and 8 in speaking. So I failed to pass the band we were required,
which is band 7 for every single module. It's just all right for me because the scholarship is not crucial for me. I took this test partly out of
curiosity.
Anyway, there are quite a few lessons I learned from this test (apart from the ID card problem), especially for the writing module. It might be helpful
to practise writing two tasks consecutively in one hour instead of dealing with them separately. And there is a big difference between practice and
exam. Even the most stupid grammar mistakes which seem to be incredible during the practice could be made during the exam. Besides, it's far
from
enough just to complete the on-class assignment, especially when there is a huge time lag between the training course and the real exam.
Hope this is of use and thank you for your coaching.
Cheers

Wang。
7; Reading: 6.5; Writing: 7; Speaking: 6。

least six”。
his pronunciation ,he did not seem like a native speaker, as he pronounced not
very clear. but I can catch him.
before beginning, he was while searching
for the information on the paper of the candidate and talking to me ,not raised
his head ."you are from jinan?" "no, no, it is jinan street of
DONG YING city of Shan dong province, dongying is a oil field city ,it
is........”"i was just came from dongying yesterday morning."
"yeah?!" After that, he press the button of the recorder and
began his question. at that time i have become very relaxed.
Task one
do you work or study?
tell about your typical work.
do you like music?
what kind of music do you like best?
can you describe an important building ?
Task two
describe a person you admire.
who?
what?
why?
task three
what kind of person are famous in your country?
recently, what kind of person be famous in your country?
..
我说:“it
is a German brand, made in shanghai, it is a corporate company.”

Han Mei
